HUMAN DIMENSION

KLASTOS

An "emergent behavior" or "emergent property" occurs when a number of simple entities (agents) operate in an environment, giving rise to more complex behaviors as a collective. Emerging processes or behaviors can be observed everywhere, from multicellular biological organisms, to traffic trends in cities or in computer simulations. Klastos project is concentrated in two fields in which I found strong assonances: social behaviors and molecules inside the matter, specifically in sedimentary rocks. The molecules of these rocks (which are subdivided into categories on the basis of their granulometry.i.e: very fine particle size, is the clay) in contact with water or calcium, mutate, changing the structure of the matter itself. The result is new material developed from the study of these two emerging phenomena: in the social and in the molecules of matter.

PREMENT

The scorpion is an archetypal image, associated with the figure of a woman. It seems to be intent on challenging the laws of evolution since its shape has undergone no change since its first appearance 350 million years ago. For today’s zoologists, it represents a fascinating enigma since it cannot be classified either as a reptile or an insect, and yet it is characterized by both of these natures. These hybrids also embody the figure of the spinal column, and its sacrum becomes the front of the animal and directs its movements.

SUMMA

The installation is a site-specific project, set in one of the symbols of LUISS,great hall (church hall). SUMMA is an installation consisting of 6 modules. The latter are hybrid, dorsal creatures whose form resembles that of the snake. The sacred bone becomes the nose of the animal and carries the rest of the body, just like in body balance, where the center of gravity is determined by the sacred bone (archetypal symbol). The figure of the snake is an ambivalent symbol, in the bible it is described as a tool of sin and a betrayal icon, but for anthropologists it is linked to the figure of the woman and specifically to the cyclicity, the change and the flow of life that is renewed. The project is inspired by the history of the structure and those who guarded it, the suore dell’assunzione , who were great supporters of women's emancipation.

ESUVIA

VIR_Viafarini (Milano)

The name is inspired by the study of the cicada mute. Conceptually, the work stems from the union of two fairy tales: The Donkey’s Skin and The Seal’s Skin. The shape of the structure is developed by studying the extent of the skin surface area of a human being. Once extended, the surface becomes a sort of mantle, the latter losing the limbs area, transforms into a shape similar to a cape, in which are visible the shapes of the spine and sacral bone from which the nervous system shifts into a braid.

NEW SKIN

VIR_Viafarini (Milano)

The New Skin project was developed during two months within the VIR_Viafarini residence, through a four-step process that narrates, step by step, the research process and addresses the concept of skin, the ultimate aim being that of suggesting to the viewer a different approach, a new possibility. Studies on the body and its size, its cover and its protection and sensitive ability accompany the search for a new fabric, a material that can become a new skin. She expands her research, on which she’s being focusing already for several months, creating new fabric samplings, prototypes of new skins, through diversified processes. She finally selects eight plant samples, created using soybean, bacterial and bioplastic tissues.

IN VITRO

"The biological experience that takes place in the lab, outside of the living organism." As lab research inevitably addresses specific questions, Sacha Turchi, who has always been passionate about research, the lab, the body, presents part of the studies in which she has been immersed for months, regarding her concept of skin also considered as a casing, a body container, and simultaneously a border, a protective barrier between the inside and the outside. For the first time on display is MOVEO, to accompany the great sculpture there are some soy tissues grown and processed in vitro and a bacterial active skin culture.

TRADERE

Trādĕre From Latin: handing over, offering, transmitting ... The artist works on this project with the clear intention of telling a story, retracing it closely from the beginning. Searching for women / grandmothers who can give her old fabrics, the artist accumulates them, washes them, and slowly, one by one, she creates dolls of cloth as if they were single plots combined to unify and complete a path. About 200 dagis of different sizes, arranged side by side, are the characterizing elements of Sacha Turchi’s project room.

ORTHO SPINALIS

A plant during its growth has needs, they are satisfied by its power of perception and through the ability to feed itself from what is in its environment. The plant can not move in search of a comfortable environment, it can only move towards what keeps it alive and that is already around it, it can seek what it is considered good, through the contact that it has with itself. The plant has a large gene pool that guarantees the ability to know how to be and how to do, as it has been handed down through its "body". It is an expression and the simultaneously simplest and higher metaphor of what the human being is.

PLACITO

A work that was created to evolve and change. It tells of the dynamic relationship between three bodies , which together, constitute a single system . The bonds that unites the three bodies determines the balance of each them. During the three years of construction, the materials of the work has gradually changed, consuming the iron. The materials that constitute the work are the same substances that inside the body lead to the proliferation of the candidiasis . It is a latent component but always present in the human body . In case of need the candidiasis activates the body's defense , but if its function does not meetthe purpose, its movement becomes degenerative and invasive for the body.

NUDUS APE

The theme addressed in this project is the "concept of beauty" and the practices used by women since ancient times to take care of their bodies through beauty treatments. These treatments, with time, alter the body. The artist wants to tell us about how these changes are registered by the body and passed down from generation to generation. The artist chooses practices that use bandages as a metaphor of the bandages that are used to treat wounds. Modified and wrapped body parts are placed in a shipping crate and its opening appears as a "sarcophagus", which also contains small objects that the body will take away to the afterlife.

CENSO

The word CENSO has several definitions: In ancient Rome, it corresponded to the compilation of lists of people and the registration of their belongings. Until modern times, the term (census) came to mean the land registry, the individual and family assets. Social status identifies the position of an individual in relation to other parties as part of an organized community.

The exhibition starts with a super 8 video. The artist reveals that that is the artist’s grandmother, her mother, then alone and then again with her daughter. Some papers accompany the video, the family’s documents showing only women’s names, which introduce a feminine path. The whole exhibition is a study of the balance anddevelopment of the individual, where the body and the centering of it are the main focus. An excellent metaphor is the plant.

SPONGIA

It is a machine built to a human scale which ideally allows his opening by clinging to it. The arms are holding two handles and the machine in its movement opens the man’s chest (part devoted to social relationship) by stretching the spine. Spongia is a shape that stems from a flower, but also from the search of an equation between the movement of the follicles in the ovaries and the meiotic reproduction of plants. The lower part is made of the same substances that constitute bones, with 68% percent of calcium. While the higher part of the sculture is the reproduction of the coral scheletization.

A salvific hybrid. A being which converts from spine into a braid. Its the synthesis of the relationship between feminine and femininity. It tells us about the genetictransfers from generations to generations. From culture into individuality. Its a doubt which is held up by our centre of balance: the spine. The tail is a directing tool for the body that converts into awareness. Its name comes from an healing plant which is used as a remedy for acute diseases that occur slowly.

MAKRAMA

Makrama is a masturbatory seesaw shaped like an internally patterned pelvis. Just as pelvis accommodates the womb, Makrama welcomes to the inside; this structure is conform to female body which, swinging, stimulates the front and the back of the lower body itself, alternately or at the same time. The name Makrama comes from miqrama, ornamental fringe of an embroided voile (specifically connected to a triangle-shaped white napkin put on the heads of young girls during religious ceremonies), also related to macramè, an ancient form of textile-making, using knotting rather than weaving or knitting. Thistraditional and very enduring lacework was handed down from one generation of women to another. The artist also used this art of lacework for the internal structure of Makrama.

SILLAR

“In everyday life, ritualising acts mark the memory of the body and form its evolution.” Sillar,a three- day performance in a room, is divided into three phases: CLEANING phase when you clean to create a space with the aim of contacting the self. The walls of the room, (which is the real artist’s home), are cleaned with water washing away the old paint that she applied a year earlier. MOVEMENT stage where the artist contacts herself and caring in a ritualising act she prepares for action. After changing her dress. ACTION The change starts from the consciousness taken in the previous phase. The artist removes the structure and she places it on the wall where it will become part of the installation. She is now free to tell her time through the changing colours of materials.

OLONE

We see the roots of two organisms growing from two small cases. The roots constitute a new one that produces fruits that contain nymphal skins of cyclades when they join. Two pure forms that take nourishment from fixed systems and contain all the possibilities of the matter, necessarily intended to become extinct . Interspersed with possible combinations of systems , they choose the only path that will lead them to evolution , the encounter in a new body that changing produces free fruits . Flowing in a game that is no longer a set procedure, but a balancing act between pure forms that make up the complex.
